Situation

We attend an emergency callout where an expansion feed pipe in the booster tank room had burst and was flooding the underground carpark.

Task

On arrival we found that a 22 mm copper pipe had burst on an elbow on the supply side of the main 4000L water tank and incoming main. We were asked to seek an immediate solution.

Action

The priority was to stop the water without impacting on the supply to 110 apartments. However, there were no isolation valves on the supply where we could easily work on the problem. We carried out a temporary repair using a clamp system. Due to a lack of isolation, beyond this section of pipe and the volume of water in the system a more technical permanent solution was going to be needed.

Therefore, we engaged the services of a specialist pipe freezing company to create a safe isolation upstream of the fault. The freeze was carried out to the 4 inch pipe and took approximately 30 minutes to achieve. Whilst carrying out the permanent repair we discovered that in addition to the leak the feed pipework had not been installed correctly and was barely connected. We therefore replaced the whole 22mm pipe section installing suitable isolation valves to allow for future repair/replacement should it be needed. After all works were completed we were then able to clear the water from the garage which involved manually pushing the water to the front of the garage and using a sump pump to lift the water into the ground water sump.

Results

  • Other than minor water disruption (1.5hours) to allow for the safe repair of the pipework, the apartments were able to retain services and avoid long-term issues with the water supply

  • The client was extremely happy and grateful for the outcome and professionalism of the service
