Situation

We received a call from our client after someone had been injured after falling, due to poor outside lighting which is situated on the outside steps to the building.

Task

On investigation it was apparent that the problem seemed to exist on all five step entrances and recommended investigation of all areas. This was duly approved and we continued with the task.

Action

The lighting system on each distribution board was blowing fuses leaving the lights inoperative. We then had the outer casing of each light removed which showed both poor installation as well as burnt out components and damaged fittings (as seen in the pictures).

We purchased new IP rated brick lights and completely rewired each staircase to ensure the installation met regulations and would not fail again. We also installed new dusk-to-dawn sensors.

Results

  • All staircases are now fully lit each night and in poor light

  • No further reports of incident since
